So this is what I've been working on with The Me Project! Low Dog Vintage is a collective of vintage finds, repurposed or otherwise shined up. LDV brings life to your home with conversation pieces your friends will ooh and ahh over.

The Me Project

Now that I'm all about reinventing myself, I'm continually looking for ways to really grab the bull that is my life by the horns.

I recently saw "The Me Project" by author Kathi Lipp on the shelves and couldn't help but buy a copy right away. It's all I've thought about!

The premise of the book is that God has a purpose for your life and without a clear plan, the dreaded To Do List will take over. Soccer practice, grocery shopping, dry cleaning.

If you don't intentionally pursue the purpose for your life, the stuff of life will tell you what your purpose is.

The book helps you first create a 50/50 list: 50 things you want to do in the next 50 years. Next, you'll pick one goal and purposefully work towards it for 21 days using the daily Project Guide written by Lipp. For example, one project is taking a weekly rest, another is finding a mentor.

Now I realize that you may be saying, "Honey pie, I'd be an idiot if I hadn't thought about getting a mentor. Bless your sweet heart, that's just plain common sense."

Yes. But do you know how to find a mentor without scaring her off? I didn't. Try this experiment: Go out and find someone in the grocery store this afternoon and ask her, "Sweetie, I've decided I need someone to help me direct my life purpose, and your shopping cart just looks so darn organized and, well, purposeful. Will you be my mentor, pretty please?" See if she doesn't leave her buggy in the Express Lane and high-tail it right out the nearest exit.

This is why I need The Me Project. I created a fabulously inspiring 50/50 list and am now excited to take off on my chosen goal starting September 1st.

Put Yourself Out There

Fear of rejection can make it really tough to put yourself out there in the world. Over the years I've found myself setting aside dreams, goals and aspirations because I worried that someone might think I was a loser.

And truth be told, odds are that someone out there in this world does think I'm am loser. That's okay; that's life.

Even though I still worry a little that I'll be ostracized if I reveal too much of my true self, I'm not going to let that worry hinder me any more in my life progress.

This week I emailed my reading room renovation to a national magazine in hopes that the project will be considered for publishing. It would be amazing if my submission gets chosen, but it's okay if it doesn't. I'm glad I tried, and I'd be upset with myself if I hadn't.

I recently read that Dr. Seuss's first book was rejected by 26 publishers before a friend finally gave him a break and printed the piece. The rest is history!

I'd like to urge you, reader, to think about the thing that you've wanted to do for awhile but haven't because you're afraid of what someone might say, afraid you might fail, or afraid you might succeed. Then... just do it!

A few words about LESS

Many months ago I read about The 100 Thing Challenge and a couple that had whittled their possessions down to 100 items. That included clothes, shoes, dishes, decor items... all of it. The author of The Challenge emphasizes that his movement is not about counting or getting rid of things, but is a freedom from consumerism.

Amen to that.

I think about that couple with 100 possessions often, and it's usually when I'm in my kitchen. Isn't that weird? But then I realized why: my kitchen is chock full of items that I never use but I felt that I needed "just in case." Or perhaps they are items that I received as wedding gifts years ago, or items that I actually registered for based on people's advice that "you can never have too many potato peelers."

Yes, you can. I have one potato peeler, and it's one too many.

This photo is of my kitchen "staged" and stripped bare for a realtor Open House. Thank you, HGTV, for making me obsess over things like that.

Once the photo shoot was over, I remembered how much I used to love a minimalist existence. When I was a freshman in college I had so few possessions and positively NO money to spend, but it was the happiest time of my life. Now years have passed and my kitchen is full of knick-knacks and whats-its that I barely touch, to my dismay.

In honor of The 100 Things Challenge, here is my own list of

20 things in my kitchen that I should get rid of:

1. Potato peeler. Use a knife.

2. Set of 4 flip-flop themed votive holders that do not match anything and are creepy, not whimsical.

3. Williams Sonoma pie crust shape-cutting kit. WS is a purveyor of beautiful, useful goods...and gimmicky, overpriced gadgetry.

4. A butter cutter. See #3.

5. The world's most enormous stainless mixing bowl. I suppose I thought I could end world hunger one giant batch of pancakes at a time.

6. A mini-strainer. Need to strain 1/2 cup of olives? Just call me!

7. A large ceramic rooster. It serves no purpose. It was cute, but then I stopped "seeing" it after I got used to having it. Now it's just something to dust.

8. A whisk attachment for my hand mixer. I used it once and the wires immediately tangled. Did I throw it away? Nope. Untangled it and cautiously stored it in my pantry. For 6 years.

9. A knife handle polishing oil and cloth. Polishing a knife makes me feel like the Barber of Seville.

10. Two sets of steak knives: a "fancy" set and an "everyday fancy" set

11. Four Japanese knives, identical. I'm saving them for when I become a sushi chef.

12. A knife sharpening iron. Who wants to hear metal scraping against metal? Take it to a sharpening shop!!

13. Two promotional insulated lunch bags.

14. A corkscrew. I don't drink wine.

15. 6 teacups and saucers. I guess I thought I'd start having tea parties once I became someone's wife.

16. Four giant silver serving bowls with various filigree, ornamentation, and metal work. I don't use them because a) they will not fit in my sink and b) even if they did, I have no patience for hand-washing filigree.

17. A set of gaudy champagne glasses from our wedding. They were gaudy then, too, but we had to have something. Why didn't I just rent?

18. Little tiny enamel birthday candle holders in the shape of shoes and purses. I don't make my own birthday cakes, and I've never put these on a cake for someone else because I was afraid they would get lost. Cue Alanis Morrisette singing "Ironic."

19. A Tupperware ChopNPrep. I have a mini food processor, but something about a Tupperware party makes you feel that you've just got to have a gadget devoted solely to the preparation of homemade salsa.

20. At least a dozen cookbooks. If I had realized that this Internet thing was going to catch on, I would have reminded myself that recipes are just a few clicks away.

There you have it. A list of 20 things. And there are more. So many more.

While I pack up for a garage sale, tell me: what useless things do you have lying around in your kitchen?

Yesterday's post was all about a grand lesson I learned during my summer travels:

Get (and be) only what you love.

My house is full of crazy knick-knacks and gizmos that I bought because they were on sale or because someone else talked me into it. For example, when registering for wedding gifts I let someone talk me into a set of tiny teacups and saucers.

"But hon, you'll need these when you entertain. What if your guests want coffee?" (Why is it that people trying to talk you into stuff often call you by a pet name, such as "hon?")

Have those cups and saucers ever seen the light of day? Yep. When I move them out of the way to reach our favorite John Deere mug. Once temperatures dip below 80, I fully intend to have a garage sale for the sole purpose of clearing some of this junk.

This weekend I had a great visit with a friend and we shopped all the antique stores in town, stopping at a few yard sales here and there along the way. A really sweet friend, Frank, was selling all of his things in a garage sale since he is moving. He gave me a great deal on this amazing rug - $10! He could tell I liked it but was debating over whether I "should" buy it, and the truth is that I really wanted it but I wasn't sure if it would make people think my living room color scheme is too crazy. (The scheme already consists of lime green, ochre, red, sky blue, black, and oatmeal.)

I recently read a magazine article, though, in which a homeowner declared, "I found that if I just buy what I really love, no matter the color or style, somehow it all just fits." So I went for it and I love it.

At our next stop, a darling antique store in town, I picked through some beautiful linens and was completely taken with a pink and white tablecloth. I put it away thinking, "I just can't do pink in my house."

But I loved it. LOVED it. So I went back and grabbed it, for only $10. I was totally elated when I realized that the cloth actually kind of coordinates with the rug I'd just bought, and it looks cheery with my red kitchen walls. Somehow it all just fits.

The rug under the table (which you can barely see in this photo) is not a piece that I love. It's from Target and I bought it because it seemed the most sensible, being that it was totally neutral. I also bought it just because it was cheap, which is a major character flaw that contributes to much of my stress (i.e., driving to 3 different grocery stores trying to find the best deal on vacuum cleaner bags). I digress.

The Target rug will be the next thing to go and I might even put the new garage sale rug under the table for kicks. And I will definitely get rid of those mini-blinds as soon as I find an alternative that I can afford and enjoy.

I'm not saying that you need to go out and buy, buy, buy to be happy, but when you do buy, it should be something that you can't stop thinking about. Something you just have. To. Have.

Turning Over A New Leaf

My trip to Montana for the Rural Socialite Reinvention Project was amazing. I learned so many life lessons that I couldn't pack them all into this blog, and probably you wouldn't want to read about them anyway because it can get kind of sappy.

But one very important lesson was this:

Get (and be) only what you love.

For some reason this lesson came very hard for me and I'm still making peace with it. But the bottom line is this: I was doing/participating in/wearing/buying way too much stuff because of what other people thought. Or, I was not doing stuff because of what others might think... and the scary part is that I didn't even realize it fully.

While I was visiting Bozeman, I was utterly amazed at the way people dressed. Professionals heading to work looked like they were leaving an episode of Survivor. Hiking boots, promotional t-shirts, and ancient cargo shorts seemed to be accepted as "Business Casual." I saw a priest wearing his clerical collar with a tweed jacket and capri pants. Capri pants. One girl bicycled up to work in what looked like a Halloween costume: a 1930s style dress, pin curls, and a fascinator cap. Seriously.

I drove by this store, Sacks, aptly named for its loads of thrift store wares. Since I thought it rude to take photos of people on the street, I snapped a photo of the Sacks window. Yes, this is how people dressed.

In the same way, the people in all of Montana seemed so open; it mattered not if your home was a palatial mansion or a shanty by the river. Everyone just acted as they felt inclined, and no one noticed or cared. In fact, it would have been actually pretty difficult to stand out, because everyone was just so free-spirited. Of course this phenomenon has its good points and bad, but on the whole it was really refreshing.

I noticed a change in my way of thinking when we spent time at a fabulous shop, Hey Day, where I saw these luxuriously whimsical Jenni Jane Personality Plates.

The idea is that you would purchase a plate (or mug or whatever) to match the personality of the person to whom it would belong. Fabulous! I was totally smitten with the whole idea and found myself obsessively poring over the display, imagining all the fun I could have with the pieces.

But then I thought to myself, "They really don't match my kitchen. And people would probably think it was cheap to eat on plastic." I just couldn't bring myself to buy even one, and I walked away sadly from the boutique thinking I'd missed a grand opportunity.

You can imagine my astonishment when, on my birthday, a beautifully wrapped gift box from HeyDay appeared on my bed.

The Hubs, in a moment of sheer genius, had returned to the store and purchased a set of 6 plates that he felt perfectly described my personality.

Overwhelmed with glee and giggling with excitement, I laid the plates out and slowly examined them one by one so that I could thoroughly savor the unadulterated joy of owning something I really loved. Even if I only used them for myself, I would enjoy these plates blissfully even if they did not coordinate with one thing in my kitchen. Thoughts danced in my head of hosting a mix-match dinner party where everything on the table was thrift shop or retro or funky. I was hooked on this feeling.

One more generous gift awaited me: a truly beautiful embroidered chambray shirt from Powder Horn.

I may look like Annie Oakely or Dale Evans when I wear it, but I love this piece. It's the kind of thing I can see myself keeping forever and then pulling out for my granddaughter one day and reminiscing, "This is from the summer your grandpa and I left our jobs and went out west."

So get only what you love, and be what you love. Life is too short to spend your time or your money or your energy on things meant only to impress other people or shield you from judgmental attitudes.

The only exception to this rule is helping or serving others; thou shalt not forgo doing something just because it's not what you love. Maybe you don't just love to bits the act of, say, helping a struggling mom with her errands for the week... but you'll be what you love when you do it.

Currently Reading: The Happiness Project

My summer was spent in fabulous southern Montana, and I loved reading each morning as the sun crept up over the mountains. Since the trip was a kind of reinvention project for me, I have been obsessed with all things self-help recently.

Don't you love those gorgeous smiling Amazon.com packages that arrive on your doorstep? It's like Christmas! I just received one this week and, among other titles, my Smiley Box contained The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.

The title immediately grabbed my attention since my Montana trip was a Happiness Project in its own right. Upon reading further, I was delighted to find that the book actually lived up to its title and went on to explain how one author systematically approached the process of increasing her own happiness. It's great! I definitely recommend.

Mindfulness

When I was in college, one of my psych professors led us in a mindfulness exercise. We had to eat a piece of Dove chocolate with our eyes closed, focusing on how long we could possibly savor the moment.

I failed miserably at this exercise.

Chew, swallow, done. Excuse myself to get some water. Return and become annoyed that some students are still "savoring" their chocolate.

Fast forward 10 years and I realized I was living my life the same way I ate that chocolate. So now I'm working on mindfulness. And it's not easy, because it is utterly against my personality.

This photo kind of started it all. I'm riding in the car and I'm like, "Hey, that's pretty." But instead of turning back to my magazine, I took a photo. Yes, it's a little tiny step. But it's progress.

How do you practice mindfulness? I'm going to need some advice.

I'm thinking of going REALLY rural, like, Amish.

This week I've been really tired of the Rat Race.

Do you every feel that way? Like you spend your entire work day just running around in circles without ever accomplishing anything other than the insatiable desire to find a faster, better, more efficient way to get it done?

That's where I am.

But today a most interesting thing happened. We took our horses up to Amish country and things changed for me.

First and foremost, I was taken aback by the utter quiet. And I've lived rural, girls; I know quiet. But this is different.

The second thing I noticed was that everyone, everyone, was working. Even the kids.

But this is different.

Whether plowing fields or sweeping porches or stitching quilts or churning butter, these men and women were utterly at peace with their work. Dare I say that they were happy with it.

In this calming and beautiful place, I found myself in conversation with one of the men my age, Jacob. Jacob told me that he takes an hour and a half lunch break every day with his wife and kids in his own home. I chuckled and described my daily lunch break, filled with phone calls and emails and one mini-crisis after another.

You should have seen the way Jacob looked at me:

like I was a lunatic.

If he gets behind on his schedule for the day, Jacob doesn't punish his staff by requiring them to order greasy take-out and spend the night at the office; he just calls on a neighbor to help. If his wife doesn't get the beans planted, she doesn't create a Vision Committee to determine the most cost-efficient way to synergize.

No jargon, no deadlines, no unnecessary stress. It's amazing.

Now, I'm not ready to give up my indoor plumbing and pedicures just yet, but it makes a girl think. You know?

J Crew Tee for Spring

Today is decidedly gray and cold in my neck of the woods, but I know that spring is just around the corner! I have a really simple outfit idea lined up and ready to go next time the thermometer creeps upward.

It demonstrates all of the outfit necessities dictated by the fabulous Clinton Kelly:

The skirt is Loft and I adore the subtle metallic animal print. This was a Christmas 2010 purchase but I wear it year-round.

I love the style and cut of this t-shirt from J Crew (Cascade tee, past season), but it honestly destroys everything. I've washed it about a hundred times and even soaked it in Dawn for 24 hours, but it continues to bleed color like crazy. So I have to always pair it with dark items and my special already-pink-tinged-sale-cotton-bra. Sad, huh?

Instead of going with the J Crew tee, I recommend one I saw at Talbots recently.

Yes, they are pricey, but I'm sure you can find one on sale if you watch stores for a few weeks. By the time it warms up enough for sleeveless ensembles, these tops will no doubt be reduced.

Texas Nails

Good morning, ya'll!

When I heard about OPI's new spring shades, The Texas Collection, I was a little skeptical. I'm not one for bright nails or long nails or big hair or rhinestones or Dallas any of that other stuff that you'd normally associate with Texas.

But Big Hair...Big Nails is a shade like no other! I asked the pedicurist for a shade of coral that wasn't going to wash out my very fair skin, and she chose for me without mentioning that it was from The Texas Collection.

When I saw this rosy, peachy, pinky goodness on my toes I nearly fell out. (That's something my great aunt used to say. It's southern for "faint.") I can't believe how good this polish looks on.

So saddle up and try it, Rodeo Queens, particularly if you're not totally sold on the spring coral trend.

Go West, Young Socialite!

The Hubs and I have embarked on many a lofty adventure. Swimming with sharks, riding a public bus in Mexico, visiting the swamps of Florida via covered wagon, living in a Mississippi State University dormitory...

But these days we're yearning for wide open spaces, breath-taking sunsets, and physical exertion in the great outdoors.

Oh, and cool honky tonks. Lots of honky tonks.

What's your favorite out west adventure? Yellowstone, sure. Garden of the Gods? Check.

What else? We need some ideas!

Dear Sushi...

Dear sushi,

There are many reasons why I love you, not the least of these being your interestingly artistic presence on a clean, white plate. I love your savory and sweet flavors bursting in my mouth; your sticky rice delights me. The satisfying crunch of cucumber, the succulent burst of smelt eggs... how I yearn for your goodness every day of the week! And tempura. Ah, tempura! Softness and crispness married together in a Japanese masterpiece of textural experience.

My love affair with you, sushi, is dulled only by the presence of The Hubs, grimacing and cringing as I enjoy every satisfying morsel. Oh, if every human were as utterly smitten with you as me! If every diner could unabashedly revel in your Asian goodness!

Until then, I shall partake alone, with my chopsticks hidden away as a dirty little secret.

My Own Private Art Gallery

While in college, I had this Richie Rich cousin who lived in the same neighborhood as my university. Upon my first arrival in town, he and his wife invited me to have flan at their 110-year-0ld home nestled atop a mountain overlooking the city.

The gorgeous home had everything: an art gallery, a theatre room, even a working elevator. I was immediately in love. Being an artist myself, I was really drawn to the gallery (pun intended!) and spent lots of time dreaming of displaying my own art in a devoted space at home.

The Hubs and my designer friend, Jenny, recently helped me make this dream a bona fide reality.

The walls were already my favorite shade of green, Edgy Gold by Sherwin Williams.

The Hubs installed some terrifically inexpensive track lighting from Lowe's to highlight my pieces.

Jenny did a marvelous job arranging (and rearranging, and re-rearranging) the pieces into a pleasing formation.

In addition to my own collages, photos, and paintings, I have a framed newspaper article from The Hubs' childhood and some works by other artist friends. Yep, that's a photo of me perched in my wedding gown in a Kubota.

I adore the fact that this gallery is the passageway to our guest bathroom. Waiting in line for the loo becomes more fun this way!

One of my abstract works anchors another photo of me in my wedding gown, below, and a Painted Ponies Motorcycle Mustang figure creates a tough-and-tender vignette.

What I like most of all about this space is that I can continue adding art pieces as time goes on, giving the area even more presence and character.

Gallery walls are great fun, particularly when all of the pieces mean something to you.

Hibiscus Blossoms Are The Only Cure For Winter Blues

Let me preface this by saying that

I am no gardner.

I couldn't tell a tulip from a tuber.

LOVE this skirted sculpture from a shop in Gulf Shores. That giant pink bloom? Hibiscus.

Even though I don't garden, February is the only time of year when I really start thinking about it as a hobby. Perhaps it's the rigid, frozen ground and the bleak, leafless trees that make me want to get my hands dirty.

But I have found that there is only one flower on the face of the earth that I do not kill instantaneously:

the Hibiscus, state flower of Hawaii.

I guess because it's so darn hot way down here in Bama, and the hibiscus requires virtually no maintenance. Still, I am consistently amazed that I can even manage to disrupt the growth pattern of a native weed, yet the hibiscus remains true and steady in my care.

It will still be a few months before I can pick up any of these beauties at the garden center, but it doesn't stop me from dreaming.

Dress Hats: Socialite Savior or No?

The Hubs and I have an ongoing debate about hats. I think they're positively fab, and he thinks they are gaudy, obtrusive, and ridiculous.

He has very strong feelings about it.

The gorgeous Kate Middleton provides us with possibly the best example of a hat-wearing hottie. I believe she's off to a wedding in both of these photos.

I tried on and loved this Jessica Simpson floppy hat. The Hubs acted as if he didn't know me and walked away.

I've gotten him used to this little casual summer topper. I love to throw it on with a shirtdress or cute shorts.

It's a $12 steal from Target, last season, though it's certainly not the stately dress hat I desire. Maybe if I literally start wearing this hat every day, The Hubs won't notice if I throw on something with satin and feathers every now and then.

But before the organization part, I think you have to know a little back story about The Rural Socialite:

When The Hubs and I first married, we lived in the worst apartment known to man. It was disgusting and it was in the middle of nowhere, but it was all we could afford.

During this very unprosperous time in my life, I would visit the local recycling center to pilfer through the magazine bin for gently used copies of my favorites. There was no bigger score than finding an "Oprah" or "Better Homes & Gardens" unscathed on top of the stack. It was a little sad.

One day I found a copy of "Oprah" with a photo of the most gorgeous linen closet ever. It was tiny, but it was organized enough to make my heart sing. I had never considered the fact that one day I might own a linen closet, and once the idea was in my head I could think of nothing else. I stood triumphantly in my little rat's nest apartment and vowed that one day I, too, would have a gorgeously organized linen closet.

Better Homes and Gardens Inspiration

It was very much a Scarlett O'Hara moment.

Today, I am the proud owner of a guest bathroom linen closet and I am happy to say that it's deliciously organized!

As you can see, I don't really need to keep a lot of linens in my little closet since I only have guests for typically one night at a time. Though storing towels and sheets was not a problem, I did have lots of odds and ends.

I started the scheme with these great autumn-colored stackable baskets from Target: 4 small orange ones and 2 medium-sized red ones. Target changes their color schemes seasonally, so watch out for pastels in spring, brights in summer, and so on.

Next, I used my handy label maker to print labels for all of the bins. You could also use scrapbook tags tied with ribbon. I organized mine in this way:

Cold & Sinus - holds cough drops, Sudafed, saline nose spray, etc. I have lots of sinus sickness!
Itchy - this one contains Benadryl, Calamine lotion, bug spray
Stomach Upset - filled with Pepto and other tummy meds
Pain Relief - Advil, Tylenol, Bath & Body Works PMS Relief massage oil
Guests - Here's where I pack up the "good washcloths" along with travel toiletries
First Aid - Bandaids, thermometer, peroxide, and the like

Also, see the little silver julep cup of razors? It's one of my favorite touches. You could also store makeup brushes or Q-tips in a similar cup.

I like storing extra toilet paper in this great rectangular wooden basket, also from Target. It perfectly holds 3 extra rolls. On the same shelf, I keep cleaning products for the guest bathroom itself.

Additional cleaning products go in this very handy caddy on the floor. I simply pick it up and run when I need to do a quick clean of another room in the house. It holds a scrub brush, Magic Erasers, Pledge, Swiffers, rubber gloves, and rags. I keep a Libman washable mop and bucket close at hand, plus a jug of white vinegar that I use for cleaning floors (dilute with water).

And speaking of floors, how do you like that new vinyl flooring??? I'm so proud of myself for picking an economical and beautiful floor that blends with the rest of the room.

Another shelf in the closet holds two guest towels and my special Hostess-With-The-Mostest wooden guest tray. This tray contains a set of monogrammed paper guest towels and a candle so I can swipe it out at a moment's notice when company shows up. I might also suggest including a nice bar of guest soap or a little bowl of potpourri.

On the same shelf you'll find my hair products (in a plastic basket) and my Velcro rollers (in a galvanized bucket from Lowe's). I like using creative and unexpected containers to hold my things.

I searched high and low for the original Oprah inspiration photo and could only find a little thumbnail version:

Okay, my closet may not be quite as high-end as Oprah's, but a real family lives in my house; it's not a show home.

One Dress That Can Be Worn 60 Ways?

Those who know me realize that I have an aversion to wearing the same outfit twice. It's vain and probably a little sad, but I think it also stretches my creativity to the max since I am also so cheap... er, frugal!

I'll spend some time each week browsing my closet and figuring out new ways to pair my existing wardrobe pieces together. My sister does the same thing, and we often consult each other to get a fresh perspective on our own clothes (or to swap with each other!).

That's why I'm so intrigued by The Infinite Dress ($325 at TheInfiniteCollection.com).

I heard about Hayley Starr on The Today Show, though the idea of a multipurpose dress has been around for years.

One dress that fits sizes 2-16? Over 60 different ways to style it, using only knots and twists to keep it in place? I'm a little skeptical.

Product Review: Stick-On Nail Polish

You may have read the recent issue of InStyle featuring Incoco Dry Nail Applique strips. Perhaps you were like me and intrigued by the idea of a manicure that you can slap on at home in 5 minutes without waiting for polish to dry.

I am no good at sitting still for an hour while my nails dry, and I go bananas about chips.

Incoco was a little more than I wanted to spend when I tacked on shipping charges, so I hiked it over to Ebay and purchased Avon Instant Manicure Dry Nail Enamel strips for about $7. I figured it's a small investment to try a product that could possibly change my life.

The first thing I noticed is that the strips come in 8 sizes, but cannot be trimmed to fit. I was a bit worried since I have very slim fingers, but these sizes were actually pretty good for me.

The second thing I noticed was the smell. This is definitely nail enamel and not a sticker! It was amazing to see a product that was totally dry, but smelled so much like nail polish.

The strips go on just like stickers, and this is the result I got:

I wasn't too pleased, I'm sad to report.

You can see that on my ring finger the strip does not come all the way to the side edge of my nail, leaving much to be desired. I could have used a larger strip, but then what would I put on the next finger? On my middle finger I used a strip 2 sizes up, but the result was a wrinkly application (a bit hard to see in this photo... but have you ever tried to take a clear close-up photo with only one hand?!).

The package says that these strips are designed to last 10 days, but mine only lasted a few hours without chipping. I think that the wrinkly creases in the polish made it more susceptible to snagging on my sweater or a hand towel, and thus it chipped away quickly.

I will say that it was quite dry in my house on the day I used these, so perhaps that had something to do with it. I do have very steady hands, though, and I'm no novice to the beauty product world... so if you're an amateur you might be better off to skip this product.

This month Sally Hansen is launching a line of dry nail polish strips, and I probably will try their product when I find a coupon. (The strips are $9.99, which is just a hair less than what I'd pay for a cheapie manicure that's guaranteed to last.)

I was disappointed by Avon's nail strips, though I've heard women swear by them. As for me? I'm going to stick with my favorite nail product of all time, Sally Hansen Mega Shine Topcoat.

I've been using this topcoat for years and I get loads of compliments on my home pedicures. After using any polish, simply swipe on a coat of this mirror shine and allow it to set for 1 minute. The shine lasts forever, and it really does help stop chips. If I'm pressed for time and need to get out the door really fast, I'll dunk my nails in ice water after the 1-minute wait is up; this guarantees a hard finish faster.

Time For a Wardrobe Update...

When spring pieces start arriving in stores, I always get a warm fuzzy feeling!

Department store winter pieces are usually too heavy for our southern winters, and summer collections often consist of spaghetti-straps that no one would realistically be allowed to wear to work. But spring collections?

Aaahhh...

Here are some of my must-haves from LOFT:

I adore the color combination of this Nautical Stripe Tee ($49.50), especially paired with colorful jewels.

With classy cargos, this Flutter Panel Bubble Hem Shell ($49.50) has a youthful vibe that doesn't get kooky.

Shirtdresses like the 3/4 Sleeve Utility Shirtdress ($69.50) are always a crowd pleaser. To avoid the "haven't we seen her in that dress a lot lately" feeling, style the piece with layered necklaces, a cool belt, a vest, or unbuttoned with a printed cami.

The Tulle Stripe Tee ($34.50) paired with a dressy skirt makes a beautiful juxtaposition between work and weekend. I love unexpected combinations like this for the office.

This chunky Oval Faceted Ring ($14.50) makes a statement against any old ensemble. Even worn with an outfit from last year, I'd feel as though my wardrobe had a lift.

Southern Snow Days... or "Sew" Days!

It is extraordinarily unusual to get more than about 2" of snow in my part of the deep south. That's why we were all so stunned to wake up Monday morning with an accumulation of ten inches!

Excuse the grainy photo (still learning about my new point-and-shoot), but look how ridiculous Devil Dog looks perched precariously atop the mounds of snow! This was taken at 5am, when the snow was actually taller than her in many places!

Needless to say, we are not equipped to handle this much powder, so everything closed down completely for 2 days. My dad reports that Quick Mart was open with ham biscuits, but I didn't risk it; the only way we were getting around was on foot.

What's a Rural Socialite to do on a snow day?

Luckily, I'd heard we were in for a doozy and purchased some sewing supplies for the occasion. You weren't going to catch me lolling about on the couch for 2 straight days!

Ta-da!!

I sewed these glamorous drapes for my guest room/office and I couldn't be more delighted! I normally would have never gone with pink, even though it's my favorite color. When I saw this whimsical traditional print in the store, however, I couldn't pass it up. I think the neutral bedding and wall color tone down any overly feminine vibes, but the pink still casts a flattering glow around the room.

Using some brown nordic-inspired trim from Ebay, I created tab tops and added a band around the bottom of each panel. And the curtain rod? It's not from Pottery Barn, it's from Big Lots! All I need is another set of natural blinds from Lowe's and I'll be set.

Some Fluffing for the Reading Room

You remember that I recently hired my friend, Jenny, as my interior designer to do some zhushing around the house, right?

She's done some great work on the Reading Room.

At first glance you probably can't tell a lot of difference, but trust me, it's really helped.

The bookshelves were pretty sparse, and I was in desperate need of a rug. Also, the hand-me-down chairs I've been using for years just weren't cutting it. I wanted a cleaner look, so Jen helped me pick 4 antique dining chairs to fill the bill. They are upholstered in green velvet to match the walls, but I've also purchased a few yards of a subtle white-and-teal paisley to re-cover them if I choose. The result is an overall feeling of lightness and visual organization. I love it!

That's all it took! Jenny rearranged all of my other goodies and made the entire space more visually pleasing. It's amazing what a good pair of eyes and a few hours of shopping can do!

I'm embarking on my post-holiday detox these days, and am sad to find that one of my favorite soul-cleansing products is no longer on the market!

BeautiControl Therma Del Sol Detoxifying Bath Soak, infused with Indian peppermint and loads of other good stuff, was my bath time staple when it debuted in 2005. Even The Hubs adored it. (Oops, wasn't supposed to say that.)

My BeautiControl rep at the time swore that this was the best cure for a hangover ever. I don't know about that, but it certainly felt all tingly and delicious.

So, now that one of my old standbys has become obscure, I need some new ideas. How do you detox after the holidays?

Newest Antique Acquisition!

2010 has been the year of antiques for The Rural Socialite!

It started when I began really, truly admiring the 1940s cash register we inherited from The Hubs' family. Obviously I always thought it was cool, but it took awhile for me to see it as a genuine showpiece. I began to realize that a home filled with only shiny new stuff lacks soul and character.

So I took a page from one of my favorite blogs, Vintage Junky, and decided to go on the hunt for a few more trash-to-treasure finds.

In the late summer I snapped up this fantastically colorful needlepoint quail, which only set me back $20 for the frame and all. I love the exaggerated traditional feel of this piece. It reminds me of something Kate Middleton would have hanging in her study.

Shortly after my quail hunt, I discovered this 70s-era china cabinet with hutch. It was a match to the china cabinet my mom used when I was growing up, only this one was much larger... 6 feet wide and 7 feet tall! At $500, I just wasn't ready to commit, and it was hard to see the potential when the piece was covered by so much fluffy, fussy junk in the store.

Just before Thanksgiving I picked up these great Queen Ann chairs with the help of Craig's List. At only $50 each, I was bitten by the vintage bug. Read all about it here.

And yet my heart still pounded for the china cabinet I'd seen over the summer.

I scoured flea markets, Craig's List, vintage stores, retail furniture shops and import stores. I could find pieces that were similar to my Disco Era hutch, but they all paled in comparison. Not only that, but I was hard-pressed to find a cabinet under $1000.

Making the decision to purchase the cabinet was one I know I'll not regret. I bargained with the dealer and got $50 knocked off the price, along with delivery to my house. I've been in love ever since! This mahogany giant holds all of my serving pieces, plus a plethora of themed cocktail napkins, glass jars, and even some New Year's sparkling cider!

Will 2011 hold as many junk bargains? Who knows? But it's worth a look...

Game Night Tonight!

I'm hosting a family game night this evening while all of the relatives are still in town and waiting for New Year's.

First up, Bingo!

This is our family tradition, started by my grandmother and her siblings years ago. Using a set with a cage is a lot of fun, but not strictly necessary. We actually prefer to play with dried beans since they are a bit more weighty than the plastic chips.

Good morning, belles! As you know, I regularly scour the pages and links of Southern Living to bring you a bit of Sunday inspiration from the Bible Belt. Normally I try to find obscure articles rather than reporting on the headliner page, but I couldn't help myself today. These homemade gifts are positively divine!

Jars of traditional holiday sugar cookies are a bit overdone, unfortunately. However, wrapped in a darling cellophane treatment and encased in a silver tin... what a masterpiece! The cookies are eye-catching enough to take the shine off a mountain of oatmeal raisins.

Here, another alternative on baked goods. Fill a square tin with muffins, teacups, and a packet of tea. Fold in a gorgeous flour sack tea towel and you're set!

I am a sucker for creative packaging, so this one takes the cake! Simply pour homemade (or, who am I kidding, store-bought) hot fudge sauce into a pretty jar, and then go crazy with ornaments, fun tags, ribbons and even an antique silver spoon. This is a sweet treat that the recipient doesn't have to eat immediately... it would make a wonderful delicacy spooned over some vanilla ice cream at midnight on Christmas Day. Yum!

Since this is the last week of work before the Christmas holiday, I'll probably find myself scrambling today to pick up a few last-minute items for co-workers who unexpectedly gift me... but with these ideas in my back pocket, I'm not worried a bit!

Southern Living Sundays: Homemade Party Trays

I don't mind when other hostesses use them, but I am flat-out against bringing grocery store party trays into my house. I have no idea what led to this snobbery but it's a part of my personality and I'm accepting it.

I am more likely to throw together a smorgasbord of goodies from my own pantry than to order the meat-n-cheese tray from Publix, and these SL spreads are truly an inspiration...

Creole Party Tray, including pickled okra (my all-time favorite!), cajun trail mix from Target, baked flatbread, smoked andouille and Bittersweet Plantation Dairy cheese. Add red wine and you're set! These goodies look fabulous on Arthur Court serving pieces.

Again placed on gorgeous silver pieces, these toast points are truly spectacular. SL suggests serving them up with fruit preserves or cured meats; I would opt for baked brie.

Called a Blue Ridge Party tray, this rustic buffet offers white wine with blue cheese, sweet potato chips, Golden Delicious apples and glazed nuts. I think I'd substitute tempura sweet potato fries with a dusting of cocoa.

Vintage Find: Pottery Barn Be Darned!

I get a wee bit annoyed when Pottery Barn touts their "found objects" because 90% of the time it's something that I've had lying around in my parents' basement for 15 years, and PB is selling it for $99.99 (with $12 shipping, no less).

Found objects are what my Papa called flea market junk.

I'm just calling a spade a spade.

This, however, is a genuine found object.

It's a giant jute coffee sack that The Hubs picked up out of the trash at a construction site. (That's my man!)

The look of glee on my face has not faltered since I spread this beauty out on the kitchen floor and admired its potential. I can imagine all kinds of possibilities: hanging it from cool pins on the wall, surrounding a piece of it in an elegant French Country frame, or even using it to upholster a Louis XVI chair!

In the meantime, it's a bit worse for wear and caked with red mud in some places. Does anyone have any idea how I should handle that? Can I launder it, do you think? I really don't want to get on my hands and knees to scrub, but that might be the only answer. Suggestions welcome!

Craig's List Find: $50 Queen Ann Chairs!!

Okay, so you know that I've hired my darling friend Jenny to redecorate my house, but I wanted to be very, very hands-on in the process. Jenny has been wonderful in helping me recognize my vision for the house and hone a personal style concept.

Earlier in the week I purchased four of these Mitchell Armless Chairs from Target on sale for $70 each.

Jenny thinks they will look amazing in my reading room, and I'd have to agree!

For a few weeks we've also been scouting Pottery Barn, generic furniture shops, and antique stores for some larger upholstered chairs to flank my entertainment cabinet in the family room. Unfortunately, either the price or the style kept coming up short.

Then, today I picked up these amazing Queen Ann chairs from a Craig's List classified ad in Franklin, Tennessee. It was quite a drive, but completely worth it!

Please excuse the dog toys and the poor lighting, but don't you love the chair?! The gold color really works with my gold walls, and it brightens up my big black media cabinet. Jenny hasn't seen them in person yet, but even if she thinks the fabric needs to be changed, I still have plenty of cash left for reupholstery or custom slipcovers.

The best part? I got two chairs for $50 each!

While I'm excited about both acquisitions, I just can't get over the fact that I got the Queen Anns for less than the Target chairs! I'm really jazzed to show you the finished project in a few more weeks, so stay tuned!

I'm an Over-Achiever, But I Hired A Designer Anyway

Hello lovelies. If you've been reading TRS for awhile, you may have realized that I am obsessively in the pursuit of utter perfection in my job, home, marriage, pet ownership, and hobbies. It's a control issue. I'm seeing a therapist.

Anyway, I recently decided to take the plunge and hire my designer friend, Jenny, to do some interior "fluffing" for me. I simply need some help pulling together my wildly different rooms, and Jenny is good at interpreting my design multiple personalities. She's doing a great job.

This is one of the rooms Jenny's working on for me, which has felt outdated for awhile. I'll send "after" photos soon.

I have to say, however, that it was a bit like admitting defeat when I decided that I actually needed professional help. I would love to say that I'm one of those bloggers who virtuously decorates her own home and then gets picked up by a national magazine for a feature story. Alas, I am just not.

But it's okay, according to one of my favorite books:

Described as "Emily Post for the new millennium," The Fabulous Girl's Guide to Decorum ($14.95, BAMM.com) was on my online pre-order list before it was even published. It's a great book with advice on all sorts of social situations and life encounters. One particular piece of advice that I gleaned from this book is that The Fabulous Girl knows when she needs assistance. Whether it's having a professional blow-out for a big event or hiring a designer, it's okay to realize that you can't do everything perfectly so you might as well enlist the help of professionals when needed.

And another thing...

My cherished copy of Fabulous Girl was lost somehow in the move between The Metro Area and The Rural Township.

What could have happened? Did a cow eat it?? I should order another copy ASAP.

Recently I read a story about how your company pulled its new online logo after receiving negative reviews from shoppers over the course of a 2-day time period. I, personally, have no feelings whatsoever about your logos.

Yes, this outfit is darling. I can see myself gathering multiple compliments from co-workers and friends if I wore this ensemble. The print, sheen, and fit are all lovely.

However.

This look is listed in your Winter Look Book. Do you find this the slightest bit odd? No? Perhaps you do not live in a climate where the average winter day hovers between 32 and 45 degrees with a gusty wind. Or maybe you are the proud owner of your own private spray tan machine. I suppose you might also have access to a 24-hour on-call esthetician to give you a dermabrasion full-body scrub weekly.

Sadly, I do not.

Southern Living Sundays: Sanctuary!

Remember in the Disney version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame when the characters cried "Sanctuary!" at the tops of their little animated lungs? I had a friend years ago who was obsessed with having what she called "a sanctuary" in her front yard. She imagined a cordoned-off little plot of vines and other flora leading up to her front door where charming suitors could sneak an after-date smooch or a gaggle of girlfriends could enjoy sneaking a late-night glass of wine.

There is really nothing I love more than perusing party-planning websites and magazines. Really. I have more entertaining books than Martha herself, and I firmly believe that the planning process is even more fun than the event itself.

That's why I absolutely adore this Champagne and Sweets party theme from WHHostess. Their blog, The Party Dress, is a must-read because of gorgeously chic ideas like this one.

The entire ensemble is inspired by Missoni and it screams autumnal coziness!

Southern Living Sundays: Newlywed Dreams

When I was a brand-new bride, Southern Living printed their 2003 Idea House issue featuring a stunning home in Austin, Texas (Harrod's Creek). I immediately fell in love with this gift-wrapping and craft station from the home, and I pictured myself passing the hours in this little nook as a new wife. I even sketched out the idea in my little design notebook of "dream home" ideas.

This is one of the few design ideas that I can honestly say I enjoy as much today as the first time I saw it. Beadboard cabinets, colorful tile, simple white counters... what's not to love?

J Crew Must-Have

Remember the J Crew gift card I got from my mother-in-law for Christmas LAST YEAR? Yeah, still haven't spent it.

You may recall that I made a few purchases that dwindled the balance to $0, but I had to return the dress because of boob-squishing madness and the cami because of wardrobe malfunctions that kept happening with the neckline. And sadly, I wish I would have returned the Cascade Tee because the color bleeds all over everything; I literally ruined 2 purses, 2 pairs of underwear, a pair of jeans, a skirt and a bra because of this top and I'm still trying to get it worked out with J Crew... but I digress.

I wish I would have spent my J Crew card on this to begin with:

Authentic Fleece Blazer, $98.

I tried this blazer on in navy at an outlet store and loved it; that was March. It has the shape of a great suit jacket but the comfort of my Samford sweats. Considering that my mummy has an amazing knack with her monogramming machine, I could have bought the jacket months ago and had it monogrammed to wear throughout the season. However, I put it back on the rack saying that $98 for a blazer was just too much to spend when it would be getting warm soon anyway. And now the stores are sold out of navy.

Gift card hives strike again.

I could have spent the entire gift card on these gorgeous shoes if I'd known they were going to exist:

Southern Living Sundays: Personalizing Your Front Porch

As any southern socialite knows, the front porch is the appetizer of your home from mid-October through January 1. With trick-or-treaters, Thanksgiving eaters, Christmas gifters, and New Year's well-wishers coming and going, you simply must make sure your front door has a little sparkle.

Luckily SL has every idea you could possibly need to carry you from now until you deliver the New year's black-eyed peas.

This dried floral showpiece with Dutch inspirations makes a terrific segue from late summer to early fall. The beautiful colors can be appealing year-round, which is fabulous since a dried floral piece lasts for ages.

Though this pinecone wreath has a distinctly winter feel, you could easily add in a few colored leaves to give this one a more autumnal bent.

A wreath with nuts and magnolia leaves also lends a feeling of rusticity to your front door for Thanksgiving and harvest time.

In all my years I've never seen a wreath as clever as this one. Designed in two pieces, this one is perfect for a double-entry door. The addition of Christmas balls and holly-themed ribbon is fresh against a backdrop of fruits and greenery.

For New Year's, a soft arrangement of herbs and foliage welcomes guests. I can see myself adding a tiny 2011 gift tag to the subtle ribbon.

Giveaway: Don't Believe Media Coverage About the Gulf Disaster!

A month ago The Hubs and I decided that instead of spending our fall vacation dollars on a far-off destination, we were going to support Gulf Shores, Alabama after possibly the worst tourism season in history.

The BP oil disaster was undeniably horrible, but I believe that the media sensationalized images of oil on the beach and for that reason Gulf Shores, a city whose main industry is tourism, suffered tremendously. While the beaches remained in pristine condition, tourists shunned the idea of visiting Alabama's Gulf Coast in fear of polluted shores.

I knew the Gulf would still be beautiful, and October is arguably the best time of year to go because of the low humidity and light crowds.

Just so you know, this is what the Gulf looks like now:

See? Healthy, happy marine life! We took this photo from aboard the Cold Mil I, one of two boats run by Cold Mil Dolphin Tours.

DIY Dog Art Silhouette

Recently on Dear Genevieve (HGTV) I saw an artist create a silhouette of the homeowners' children. It was a cheap art project that really personalized the space. Not one to shy away from a DIY project, I set to work on making one right away.

For about $5 and in 5 easy steps, you can create one just like mine! Here are the details:

1. Choose a subject. Since I don't have children, I had to use Lorie as my model. While The Hubs held a doggie biscuit just above Lorie's nose, I snapped her photo in front of a light wall.

It took a few tries to get the composition right, but I finally made it work.

2. Download the photo onto your computer, lightly tape a piece of light paper to your screen, and trace the image. You could also print the photo and trace it, if you wish. If you do print it, I might suggest taping the image and paper to a bright window so that you can see it more easily. After tracing, I found it necessary to use my artistic ability and add in a few details, like the feathering around her ears and eyebrows.

3. Use Elmer's Rubber Cement to adhere the tracing onto heavy black paper.

4. Use scissors and/or an Xacto knife to carefully cut the image out. It's easier to turn the paper than to turn the scissors, and I found it helpful to chop out small portions little by little rather than cutting it all out in one whack.

5. Using more Rubber Cement, adhere the silhouette to scrapbook paper and place the entire image into a frame. Voila!

I have framed my finished silhouette and placed it on my bedside table next to Lorie's bed. I'm really proud of this very personalized piece of art. As an added touch, you could use rub-on letters to spell out your subject's name, or even a monogram.

If you're not fond of tracing, I also Googled "How To Make A Silhouette" and found several tutorials that explain how to create this piece digitally with photo editing software.

Southern Living Sundays: Exterior Update

I'm all over the "work with what you have" trend that seems to have permeated design since the economy's, ahem, downturn.

Last night I dragged The Hubs to Lowe's, were we used coupons to purchase loads of small touches (drawer pulls, window film, lighting) to reinvent our 12-year-old home.

I'm in love with craftsman and bungalow style homes, so I was inspired to see this exterior makeover of a 1920s bungalow.

If I had seen this house while walking my dog, I probably would have crossed to the other side of the street. I certainly wouldn't have put a down payment on it like the Gilmer family, of Maryland.

However, after seeing this makeover, I've changed my tune! Isn't it amazing how some designers can change a home's entire feel so drastically?

This is the backyard before...

...and this is the after! The homeowners wanted an Asian theme, which I don't really see interpreted literally in this house. I think it's the subtlety that makes it work.

And the inside got a makeover, too! Even the dog coordinates with the look!

Amy Bayliss is a creative soul who had the ingenuity to create an online women's ministry called A Woman Inspired. I heard about Amy many months ago and was recently introduced to her blog which will be taking the place of the AWI newsletters I'd been receiving each month.

Amy has such a vibrant spirit and comes up with the most amazing ideas. One such idea is The Homemaker's Challenge (see the button on my sidebar?), and I think it's positively fab for all you Rural Socialites out there. Amy's idea is that women love a creative challenge, but they can't always leave their children, jobs or home responsibilities to pursue a great endeavor like Design Star or Project Runway. So, The Homemaker's Challenge was designed so that women could participate from the comfort of their homes.

Last Friday's challenge was:

What's In Your Closet? Fashion for Less

Readers were challenged to come up with 3 entirely new outfits without spending a dime. Ironically, this is a challenge that my Sissy and I already issue to one another long-distance on a regular basis. We call it "Shop Your Closet" and we even created a scrapbook to give to our children one day.

With that, here are my 3 outfits for the Fashion For Less challenge!

Here I chose a blousy Kohl's top that doesn't have a lot of pizazz on its own, and I layered a Banana Republic sweater vest over it. I added a fabric zebra belt from J Crew (on sale last year!) and paired this with slim grey chinos. You can't see, but I'm wearing my brown patent ballet flats. I like this look because the colors work well with my fair skin tone.

Even though this photo is a little odd (snapping a picture in the morning before work makes for some crazy camera shots, particularly when I'm trying to make sure my shoes are in the photo!), I loved the outfit. I took a plain white button-down from Wal-Mart (old as the hills!) and coupled it with an old Ann Taylor Loft satin skirt. I added grey melange tights and a drapey sweater from Kohl's, plus some really old navy round-toe pumps from Target.

Winter clothes bum me out beyond words, so I had to come up with a great outfit that I could enjoy even on blustery days. Here I have layered an Ann Taylor plum-colored cardigan over an Ann Taylor Loft summer sundress. I added purple leggings from Simply Vera Wang (Kohl's) plus a wide brown belt. I finished off with scrunch boots and a gold knot necklace from Private Gallery. All of these items are from my closet and are at least a year old!

When it comes to design, I think a fireplace mantel is just about the most versatile feature your home can have. As a little girl, I was fascinated with arranging and rearranging seasonal items on our mantel at home, and today (since my current home lacks a fireplace) I enjoy rearranging items on my sideboards, shelves, and tables. I always keep my issues of SL handy for ideas!

Private Gallery - A Favorite for Southern Belles

Last year around this time, my two best girlfriends introduced me to Private Gallery, and it's now one of my favorite southeastern stores. Since the besties are a few years younger than me, I honestly thought I could never be in love with what I would consider a "juniors only" store. One part Express, one part ModCloth, two parts glam - this shop has it all.

I love that Private Gallery is youthful but also sophisticated. And their prices are to die for!

A great selection of Hobo International means I can up the anty, price- and quality-wise.

I always feel hip and spunky in their gorgeous stores! My favorite is in Orange Beach, where I snagged my favorite pair of slouchy boots for $49.

PG is also a fabulous place to find statement jewelry at a very reasonable price. I've rarely spent more than $12 on baubles, though it looks like I've dropped loads more cash.

Southern Living Sundays: Art Imitating Life

I am a sucker for art that has a hidden meaning or a special story. Virtually all of the art in my house is traced back to some inside joke or family story.

That's why I am in love with this artwork in the 1920s Chattanooga home of George Krauth.

It is an enlargement, obviously, of a vintage envelope bearing a 1917 postmark. But the hidden fabulosity of this piece is that the envelope is addressed by George's great-grandmother and bears his own namesake, his uncle George. Amazing!

Yesterday at an antique store I found this amazing framed needlepoint of a colorfully whimsical quail. Southern Living Sundays: Al Fresco!

Even though we're suffering through Indian Summer here in my neighborhood (eek! 94 degrees this weekend!), there are still occasional moments when dining outdoors is possible. If we have an autumn this year in my neck of the woods, I am determined to use the cool weather to my advantage and create a charming outdoor space for dining and relaxing.

I'm drawn immediately to the light fixture and the floor-to-ceiling curtains, but then my eye turns to the painted floor. The metal chairs are a great solution since they could be hosed off during pollen-heavy summer days.

This graveled courtyard area is fantastic! I love the idea of not weeding next year. While this space boasts a coffee table and bench, you could easily incorporate a rustic table and a few chairs, along with a canopy and outdoor chandelier. I especially love that the plantings are all in containers, making them easy to rearrange and zhush as necessary.

The lighting in this space is both beautiful and economical; tiny terra cotta pots can be picked up at Old Time Pottery for a steal. Add plain white candles and a few Christmas lights, and you're in business!

While we're talking fantasies here...

I've always imagined a little playhouse outside where I could entertain guests or escape after a hard day.

Martha's Halloween

Around this time of year my wheels always start turning. I'm positively committed to having a fabulous and chic Halloween party before I die. It comes from a traumatic experience in 11th grade during which I worked for hours on a to-die-for Halloween party only to be foiled by a guest list of duds who ended up in a destructive choosing of sides when the "it" couple broke up on my porch. Maybe one day I'll write a post on the importance of choosing your guest list wisely. For now, I'll just ruminate on my very favorite Martha Stewart Halloween ideas.

This creepy but grown-up table is exactly in line with the theme I want to pursue.

I like for the room to be subtly creepy, not in-your-face black and orange.

Why does Martha look so natural holding a skull in her hands?

I like the use of lots of black with a very vintage gothic feel.

This is kind of cool, no? And Martha was kind enough to include instructions.

How weird! These "specimen jar candles" are almost too creepy.

I thought this idea for making gothic "curtains" from black paper was brilliant.

And for my costume, I think I'd definitely go with something totally weird.

This hat made with a skull cap and a glue gun is fun and funky.

Or maybe the "glampire" look coined by Martha a few years ago.

Current Obsession: Upscale Grocers

When I was a kid, we had one teeny-weeny grocery store: Piggly Wiggly. I love The Pig just as much as the next girl, but once I visited a Whole Foods I was ruined forever.

These days I have to take basically a mini-vacation to visit these stores, but I fantasize regularly about a grocery cart brimming with artisanal breads, free-range chicken, and organic cereal.

Southern Living Sundays: Furniture Makeover

I obsess over frugality more than I even obsess over Southern Living. I heard on the Today Show last week that frugal is actually now cool, even if you can afford to spend.

I was cheap when cheap wasn't cool.

To that end, I am permanently enamored with furniture re-do projects. I've only done a few myself, including conversion of a $10 dresser into a china cabinet. Still, my imagination runs wild when I see an old piece of furniture beggin' for some lovin'.

On SL's website I always enjoy the features that describe furniture makeovers, and this one was no exception. See the above chest, looking all farmy and full of home-cooked goodness.

Now here's the same piece, dressed up with an eclectic and slightly European feel. The glass knobs are great, and I think the navy color keeps it from feeling too precious. Various accessories complete the look. Can't you just imagine coming in at night and tossing your keys on this little piece? The multiple drawers would be ideal for coupons, shopping totes, and dog leashes.

Reading Room: Complete!

Home improvement is my favorite pastime and my arch nemesis.

For those of you following RS regularly, you'll remember hearing about my Dining-Room-to-Reading-Room renovation.

For several months I've been slaving to build my own cabinets, and for months The Pooch has been staring at me like this:

Worry no more, Poochie. The Reading Room is complete!

Custom made valance and coordinating toss pillows by yours truly. I also hand-built all of these bookcases with my dad and mom over the summer. I am stunned at how much stuff these bookcases will hold! Already I have about half my books, plus my sewing machines stowed in the beadboard compartments below!

A blue deal-of-the-century loveseat adds coziness, while the hand-me-down dining set from the 70s gets new life with a coat of high gloss paint.

LOVE this room! I've already gotten tons of use out of it for a dinner party and for reading/study. You'll recall that I wanted to add some functionality to my rarely-used dining room. I couldn't bear to part with my dining room table (not the table itself, just any dining room table), yet I needed a cozy place to curl up with a book and possibly take a nap.

The November 2009 issue of Better Homes and Gardens suggested converting a dining room into a library space, and I loved the idea. I'm still looking for photos of the story online to share with you.

The initial budget was $1000, and I happily stayed very close to course! In the future, I might like to add a rug or perhaps replace some of the dining chairs with upholstered pieces.

I'm happy to have this reinvented space in my home, but I am even more delighted to have completed the project myself. Last year I went to a big-box store and got a quote for these cabinets... $3800 was the price even without hardware and paint! To have saved myself so much money while also undertaking a huge challenge was quite a feat. I would like to thank my parents for their invaluable help and expertise, and also my Sunday School teacher, Janny, who helped me coordinate colors. Also thanks to Janny's husband, Billy, who encouraged me not to cheap out on finishing touches after I'd worked so hard on the cabinets.

Now, off to find a good book!
